Having taken all four Biology competitions offered by ASDAN China this year (ASOB, IBO, BBO and BIO-USACN), across the span of two years I feel that Biology Olympiads taught me three things.
First, is an appreciation for all fields of biology. The depth and breadth of knowledge required to achieve good results in a Biology Olympiad pushes students to explore fields that they may not be previously familiar with. For example, I personally find ecology and evolution to be the most intriguing part of this subject, but preparing for these exams also taught me to value the intricacies of cell biology and human physiology.
Second, I learned to manage my time and seek the most efficient, rather than the most exhaustive revision strategies. Rather than recopying all of my notes repeatedly,I began reading through my notes on topics I had difficulty with and then seeing how many points I could recall afterward. I also focused on remembering the underlying logic of biological processes. Though this method was less detailed, it ultimately came to my benefit as it helped me save time and prioritize my weaknesses.
Lastly, I would encourage students who are interested in biology to try their hand at Olympiad-level questions early. Not only does this mean that you can better understand your strengths and weaknesses from previous competitive experiences, but also because it means that you can also glean some advice from your upperclassmen, both on Biology Olympiads and IB Biology. This also demonstrates your rigor and dedication to the subject.
To conclude, I am incredibly grateful to our school for hosting these competitions on-campus and for all the guidance we’ve received from our Biology department.
今年,我有幸参与了ASDAN中国主办的四项生物竞赛,包括ASOB、IBO、BBO以及BIO-USACN。在历经两年的磨砺与历练中,我深切地体会到生物测评竞赛为我带来的三重宝贵启示。
首先,生物测评竞赛使我得以领略生物学各领域的独特魅力。为了在竞赛中取得佳绩,我广泛涉猎并深入钻研了生物学知识,这促使我主动探索那些以往可能未曾触及的领域。
例如,虽然我个人对生态学和进化论颇感兴趣,并认为它们是这个学科中最为引人入胜的部分,但准备竞赛的过程也让我意识到细胞生物学和人体生理学等细分领域同样蕴含着丰富的知识内涵和深刻的研究价值。
其次,我在生物测评竞赛中学会了如何有效管理时间,并寻找出最具效率且不易耗损精力的复习策略。我不再拘泥于传统的机械抄写笔记方式,而是开始有针对性地阅读那些我感到困难的主题,并检验自己能够记住多少关键点。
同时,我也注重把握生物过程的内在逻辑,尽管这种方式只能表现有限的细小知识点,但却有助于我节省时间并优先关注自身的薄弱环节。
最后,我衷心建议对生物学充满热情的学生们尽早尝试参与测评级别的竞赛。这不仅能够让你们从过去的竞赛经历中更加清晰地认识自己的优势与不足,还有助于你们从学长们的宝贵经验中获得有关生物测评竞赛及IB生物等方面的指导与建议。同时,这也是展示你们对这门学科的严谨态度与投入精神的重要平台。
我很感谢学校为我们提供在校园里参与这些竞赛的宝贵机会,以及生物组老师们所给予的专业指导与悉心教诲。这些经历不仅丰富了我的知识体系,也锻炼了我的思维能力,为我今后的学术研究与个人成长奠定了坚实基础。

I went in with no expectations, understanding that creating anxiety would not aid my studies for the competition. From the outset, I committed to studying at my own pace, balancing my time between schoolwork and competition preparation. The process required a deep dive into various biological concepts in ways that transcend the IB curriculum.
I utilised a range of resources, including textbooks, online courses, and past papers to hone my understanding of specific topics. One unique approach I adopted was creating a visual mind map of complex biological processes, which helped me see connections between different concepts and facilitated deeper understanding. Collaborating with peers was also instrumental; they provided motivation and another source of guidance in the preparation process.
Participating in the competition tested not only my knowledge but also my analytical and problem-solving skills. The experience taught me the importance of perseverance and adaptability, especially when faced with complex questions under time constraints. Each stage of the competition brought its own set of learning, pushing me to think critically and apply concepts in novel ways. Receiving medals is a testament to the hard work and dedication invested in this endeavour, and it has further ignited my passion for biology.
我并未抱有任何期望,因为我深知,制造焦虑并非为竞赛做准备的明智之举。自始至终,我始终恪守自己的学习节奏,精心平衡课业与备战的时间分配。此过程要求我深入钻研超越IB课程范畴的生物学概念。
我充分利用了各类资源,包括教科书、在线课程及过往论文,以锤炼自己对特定主题的理解。我所采用的一种别具一格的方法是创建描绘复杂生物过程的视觉思维导图,此举有助于我洞察不同概念间的联系,并促进更深层次的理解。与同伴的协作亦颇为助益,他们在备战过程中为我提供了动力与另一种形式的指引。
参与竞赛不仅是对我知识储备的考验,更是对我分析与解决问题能力的挑战。这段经历使我深刻领悟到毅力与适应能力的重要性,尤其是在面对时间紧迫且问题复杂的情境时。
竞赛的每一阶段均带来其独特的知识体系,促使我进行批判性思考,并以新颖的方式应用所学知识。最终荣获奖牌,不仅是对我辛勤付出与奉献精神的肯定,更进一步点燃了我对生物学的热情。

In order to prepare for BBO and BIO-USACN, I used various materials and tools, including textbook study, online resources, and past papers. I started by reviewing the syllabus to study the relevant topics that are covered in IB courses. Online resources are also helpful, such as study notes from savemyexam.
I also love to use Bilibili, there are many great online lectures/lessons, I personally find it can help me better grasp and remember knowledge, because my eyes and ears are simultaneously obtaining knowledge, which is very effective.
Finally, I completed all the past papers, and it is very important that I reviewed the mistakes I made. BBO and BIO-USACN has a high standard on student’s logical interpretation, so it is also necessary to train these thinkings in daily life.
为了准备参加BBO和BIO-USACN,我充分利用了多样化的学习材料与工具。我深入研读了课本内容,系统学习了IB课程的相关主题,确保对基础知识有扎实的掌握。同时,我也积极利用在线资源,如savemyexam平台上的学习笔记,这些资源为我提供了丰富的补充信息和学习视角。
