The flag raising ceremony held at SUIS Gubei last week was hosted by Brian Lin from 11SUE and Max Wang from 11NP. The ceremony focused on two crucial topics: responsible social media use and environmental protection. Our Principal, Mr Walsh, delivered speeches during the ceremony.

Mr Walsh emphasized the importance of using social media rationally. In the digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives. Although it brings numerous conveniences, there are also potential negative impacts. Mr Walsh reminded the students to use social media sensibly, avoid excessive indulgence, and maintain a critical mindset towards the information they encounter.

In April, as nature comes back to life, Earth Day, which is celebrated annually at SUIS Gubei, is just around the corner. This special month serves as a constant reminder of the significance of environmental protection. As the seasons change, we should reflect on our responsibilities in taking care of the earth. When all the small actions are combined, they can have a profound impact on creating a greener and healthier future.
四月，大自然复苏，协和古北每年都会庆祝的地球日也即将来临。这一特殊的月份时刻提醒着我们环境保护的重要性。随着季节的更迭，我们应当思考自己在呵护地球方面的责任。每一个小小的行动汇聚起来，都能对创造一个更绿色、更健康的未来产生深远影响。
Mr Fernandez from the humanities department introduced the school’s Eco Club. The club not only advocates love and respect for the environment but also firmly believes in the power of collective and individual actions. Last year, the reusable water bottle campaign led by senior students was a great success, with more than 100 cups sold, and it also influenced the school’s policy on disposable paper cups and plastic cups. The Eco Club provides a platform for students with different interests to participate in environmental protection. For example, math enthusiasts can help calculate the school’s carbon footprint, and writing enthusiasts can share the club’s projects through articles.

Julia Zhu, a member of the Eco Club from 10TF, shared the club’s recent energy-saving research. Closing the door behind us, which seems insignificant, is actually an important energy-saving behavior. In school buildings, air conditioners create a comfortable environment for us. However, if the doors are left open, the cool or warm air will escape, causing the air conditioners to consume more electricity. The Eco Club is currently researching the energy consumption when the doors are open and plans to purchase door-closing reminder devices to help everyone develop the good habit of closing doors.
来自 10TF 的生态俱乐部成员 Julia Zhu 分享了俱乐部近期的节能研究。随手关门这件看似不起眼的小事，实则是重要的节能行为。在学校里，空调为我们营造了舒适的环境，但如果门开着，冷热空气就会流失，导致空调消耗更多电量。生态俱乐部正在研究开门时的能源消耗情况，并计划购置关门提醒装置，帮助大家养成随手关门的好习惯。
Brian and Max also shared their personal initiatives for Earth Day. Brian will choose to only take public transportation or walk on Earth Day, which is both environmentally friendly and beneficial to health. Max suggested that everyone put down their electronic devices and go for a walk with family or friends to reduce energy consumption.

As the flag-raising ceremony came to an end, all the teachers and students were reminded that Earth Day is not just a date on the calendar but also a concept.
